Ihr Ziel war das Königreich Ungarn, wo nach der Befreiung von der türkischen Herrschaft Arbeitskräfte benötigt wurden. Die Einwanderer nannte man unabhängig von ihrer Herkunft »Schwaben«. Sie waren wirtschaftlich erfolgreich und prägten weite Landstriche. Nach 1918 gehörten diese nun »Donauschwaben« genannten Gruppen drei verschiedenen Staaten an.Ab 1944 verloren Hunderttausende durch Flucht, Vertreibung, Verfolgung und Deportation ihr Zuhause, Tausende ihr Leben. Ein Großteil der Entwurzelten fand in Süddeutschland Zuflucht. Lediglich die Banater und Sathmarer Schwaben in Rumänien und ein Teil der Ungarndeutschen durften bleiben.
