Fin observateur et amoureux de la nature, Emmenegger est un peintre d'une originalité frappante, tant dans le choix de sujets insolites que dans l'audace de ses compositions, qui compte parmi les artistes suisses les plus importants de sa génération.Formation artistiqueEmmenegger commence sa formation à l'école des arts appliqués de Lucerne (1883-1884). Il la poursuit à Paris, à l'Académie Julian auprès de Jules Lefèbre et Gustave Boulanger, puis dans l'atelier de Jean-Léon Gérôme. Drawing partly upon his own fieldwork among American Indians, anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan examined the kinship systems of over one hundred cultures, probing for similarities and differences in their organization. In his attempt to discover particular types of marriage and descent systems across the globe, Morgan demonstrated the centrality of kinship relations in many cultures. Kinship, it was revealed, was an important key for understanding cultures and could be studied through systematic, scientific means. Anthropologists continue to wrestle with the premises, methodology, and conclusions of Systems of Consanguinity and Affinity. Scholars such as W. H. R.Rivers, Robert Lowie, Meyer Fortes, Fred Eggan, and Claude Levi-Strauss have acknowledged their intellectual debt to this study; those less sympathetic to Morgan's treatment of kinship nonetheless do not question its historical significance and impact on the development of modern anthropology. L'arcidiacono di Notre-Dame, Claude Frollo, si innamora della celebre danzatrice zingara Esmeralda. Incarica perciň il grottesco campanaro della cattedrale, il gobbo Quasimodo, di rapirla. Ma il capitano Phoebus de Chateaupers la trae in salvo e conquista il suo amore. Frollo uccide Phoebus facendo ricadere su Esmeralda la colpa del delitto. Quasimodo intanto, commosso da un atto di gentilezza di lei, diventa quasi un suo schiavo e la conduce a Notre-Dame per proteggerla. Dopo una serie di peripezie, Esmeralda verrŕ catturata e fatta impiccare sotto gli occhi di Frollo, che osserva impassibile l'esecuzione.
