A kormányzó, miniszterelnökök, miniszterek, a hadsereg vezetői, közéleti szereplők, írók és művészek memoárjai sorra jelentek meg a hetvenes évek végétől. Azt gondolhatnánk, hogy nem maradt már kiadatlanul olyan terjedelmesebb korabeli írás, ami jelentős közszereplő emlékeit őrzi. Az élet azonban tartogat meglepetéseket. A közelmúltban került elő Zsindely Ferenc - aki Teleki Pál, Bárdossy László és Kállay Miklós mellett volt miniszterelnökségi államtitkár, majd 1943. március 29. és 1944. március 22. között a kereskedelmi miniszteri pozíciót töltötte be - kalandos sorsú naplója. A legfelsőbb körökben mozgó politikus, aki már csak hivatalánál fogva is miniszterelnökök bizalmasa volt, néhány héttel Teleki Pál halála előtt kezdte lejegyezni élményeit, utolsó bejegyzései pedig Bárdossy László népbírósági perére reflektálnak. Zsindely Ferenc sok humorral, személyes vallomásokkal, politikai elemzésekkel, pletykákkal, a korszak jellegzetes alakjainak karcolatszerű jellemzéseivel tarkított naplója a magyar háborús memoárirodalom gazdag örökségének értékes darabja, amely még ennyi évtized után is képes újat mondani. Az események apró részleteinek rekonstruálásához is segítséget nyújt, de attól igazán kiemelkedő, hogy a kor és szereplői gondolkodásának mélyebb megértéséhez ad releváns szempontokat, mivel egy befolyásos kormánytag szemével követhetjük nyomon a magyar kabinet második világháborús politikáját. Zsindely Ferenc naplója még nem áll a vesztett háború utáni magyarázkodás kényszerének hatása alatt, és így hiteles képet ad arról, hogy az események résztvevői hogyan értékelték a történteket, hol és hogyan látták a hibákat, miképp ítélték meg a saját felelősségüket, hogyan mérték fel saját mozgásterüket és perspektíváikat, s hogyan élték meg az egyre szűkülő ellenséges gyűrű közepén a háború mindennapjait.
