Eliphas Lévi születési nevén Alphonse Louis Constant, (Párizs, 1810. február 8. - Párizs, 1875. május 31.) francia okkultista, filozófus, író. Az Ő nevéhez fűződik az új mágikus reneszánsz, ezért számtalan híve és követője volt az elmúlt időszakban. A beavató levelek Spedalieri bárónak íródtak, aki Lévi tanítványa volt és mestere nem csak a mágiával kapcsolatos tanokat és tudását adta át, hanem szinte a teljes okkult-ezoterikus repertoár bekerült a beavató levelek sorába. A könyv érdekessége, hogy Spedalieri báró csak jóval mestere halála után (1875-ben halt meg Lévi) adta tovább a neki szóló leveleket, így ezek első publikálása 1922-ben történt meg.
